Lukas Hein starts dual study program at AMCON

The career choice for the graduating class of 2019 is just around the corner, and not everyone yet knows how their journey after school will continue. For Lukas Hein, a high school graduate from Clemens-August-Gymnasium (CAG) in Cloppenburg, it’s clear: “I want to become a software developer and study computer science.”

Currently, the high school graduates of this year’s class are thinking about how their professional paths should continue. Whether it’s vocational training, university studies, or initially a voluntary social year — the possibilities are almost endless. Choosing a career is a first life-changing decision for many students, and it’s not always easy to make right away. While many classmates are still struggling with their wishes or taking a break, Lukas Hein has known for some time how he wants to proceed after finishing school. The 18-year-old wants to become a software developer and has secured his place for the dual study program at Hochschule Weserbergland in Hameln starting August 2019.

Even as a child, Lukas was fascinated by consoles and computer games. When he got his first Nintendo DS, he was impressed by the graphics of the games.
“At that moment, I already knew that being a software developer must be a pretty cool job,” says Lukas Hein with a laugh. From then on, he spent a lot of his free time exploring the topic, was active in his school’s LEGO Mindstorms club, and largely taught himself how to program.
“I realized that I really enjoy programming itself, and it doesn’t matter whether I’m programming games or other applications,” says Lukas. Many young people who enjoy playing games privately at the PC have a misconception about the profession of a software developer. That’s why Lukas did his school internship in 10th grade at a company in Löningen to get a glimpse of everyday life in a software company. At first, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to spend the whole day doing a sedentary job, but he balances that out with more physical activity in his free time. He enjoyed the internship, and after the two weeks it was clear to him that he wanted to pursue this career path. The software company AMCON has been supporting the LEGO Mindstorms club with staff for several months and has offered open days for the computer science course at CAG for several years. This is how Lukas got to know his future employer.
“I liked it so much here that right after the tour I went straight to the internship supervisor and arranged an internship,” says the high school graduate. After this voluntary internship, he was offered a dual study place in Business Informatics in cooperation with Hochschule Weserbergland, which he gladly accepted. He is well aware that the dual study program offers several advantages. “Switching between block teaching at the university and practical phases in the company allows me to apply what I’ve learned directly. Financially, the dual study program is also attractive,” says the prospective student. Whether as a project manager, development manager, or software developer — the dual study program in Business Informatics opens up various career options for Lukas Hein. “At the moment, I see my focus more on software development, although that may change during my studies.” Now he’s looking forward to his graduation celebration and moving to Hameln. Starting in August, his new chapter begins as a dual student and aspiring software developer.
