21 kids is quite a lot. That surely requires a lot of preparation time. When did you start preparing, and how was it?

Nico Lammers, dual student in Business Informatics, 6th semester:

We started preparing as early as March. First, we had to decide which of our three locations would be best suited. However, it quickly became clear that we wanted to hold the day at our newest location because it offers the most space and the office rooms are bright and modern. Then we moved on to brainstorming and content planning. What do we want to show the kids, or what would interest them? How many stations should we have? Which skills and values do we want to convey? With these questions, we gradually developed a plan and finally came up with five different stations. Then we ordered any missing materials, tested the individual stations beforehand, and created a schedule. There were also smaller tasks like ordering lunch, making small stamp cards for each station, packing the goodie bags, etc. So, there was a lot to do.

What were the biggest challenges for you?

Colin Plaggenborg, apprentice in Application Development, 2nd year:

The most difficult part was finding something suitable for all the kids. The participants ranged in age from about 11 to 16 years. That’s quite a wide span regarding interests and abilities. Of course, we didn’t want anyone to get bored or feel overwhelmed by the tasks. But I think we found a good mix of tasks and games so that there was something for every age group.

What was the goal of Future Career Day, and what did you want to achieve?

Jamil Raai, dual student in Business Informatics, 6th semester:

With Future Career Day, we mainly wanted to spark the children’s and teenagers’ curiosity about the profession of software developer and teach them basic programming skills in a playful way. It was important to us that the participants had fun and looked back on the day positively. On the other hand, it was also cool to run Future Career Day as our own small project independently. From planning to execution to follow-up, we were allowed to do everything ourselves and have a say. We were given a lot of responsibility, so it was especially important for us to successfully complete the project.

What do you take away from the “Future Career Day” project, and what did you learn?

David von Garrel, apprentice in Application Development, 2nd year:

We realized that good preparation and planning are often the key to success. Because we planned and tested everything in advance, we were able to fully focus on the kids and the stations on the day itself. It also became clear that such an event doesn’t end once it’s over. Of course, we had to clean up and do follow-up work afterward. Documentation and reporting were also part of it. For example, we helped create a short video about Future Career Day. It was also nice to interact with children of different ages and see their interests and skills. I think it was good for the kids that apprentices took care of the supervision. This created a relaxed and informal atmosphere. I’m in my second year of training, so I haven’t been in the profession for very long myself and could easily relate to the older kids, who will soon face the same decision.

Overall, we had a lot of fun, were able to take on responsibility, and learned a lot about project and event planning. It was also great to carry out a cross-year project with the other apprentices and students from all training years and semesters. This brought us closer together as a team.

Olaf, you attended the mFUND conference in Berlin in September. What kind of conference was it?

mFUND is an innovation initiative that supports research and development projects focused on digital, data-driven applications for the mobility of the future. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) supports projects through mFUND that demonstrate how technological progress and digital innovation can help rethink mobility. At the conference, currently funded projects were presented to the professional audience — including the HUSST4Maas project, which I had the opportunity to present.

What was your presentation about?

The project essentially focuses on two main aspects:
First, the extension of the manufacturer-independent standard interface (HUSST) for exchanging fare and result data in public transport (ÖPNV). Now, fares from the parking and city toll sectors can also be represented using this interface.
Second, a prototype converter was developed that can process fare data in the HUSST format for the product and control module (PKM) of (((eTicket Deutschland.

Did you carry out the project alone?

No. AMCON was the consortium leader in the project and took on the role of presenting it. The project is carried out together with the following project partners:

ALMEX GmbH

Fachhochschule Potsdam

highQ Computerlösungen GmbH

ICA Traffic GmbH

International School of Management GmbH

ITS Germany e.V.

krauth technology GmbH

In the photo, you look very passionate about the topic. Is that true?

Yes, absolutely. I consider the transformation of transportation to be very important for society, and I am proud that through this project we can contribute to it. Many factors play a big role in this. The simple exchange of data is, for example, an important aspect. It’s difficult to visually represent because there are no flashy apps or websites to showcase — rather, we are working in the engine room of the transportation transition. Most processes rely on a large amount of data. By standardizing and simplifying data exchange, public transport becomes easier and more attractive. If we consider the transportation transition as a huge ship, then everything must work smoothly in the engine room for it to be steered effortlessly.

Whether it’s new vehicles, more comfortable seats, public transport apps that make multimodal mobility concepts tangible, or an expanded food and beverage offering – there’s something for every area. This year, our colleague Diana Schlee also had the opportunity to explore Deutsche Bahn’s expanded mobility services as part of a “Women in Mobility” meeting and was able to test some of the new features before they are made publicly available to passengers. Climate protection and sustainability were particularly in focus this year.

The event “Experience Mobility” was opened by the DB Management Board, led by Dr. Richard Lutz, who welcomed the guests and presented initial plans for the coming years. Deutsche Bahn is working to expand the #strongRail initiative to further strengthen its role as a driver of CO₂ reduction in the transport sector. The product innovations are intended to encourage more and more people to switch to the green railway – and to stay on board for the long term. One such initiative is the “Deutschlandtakt”, which aims to connect major German cities every 30 minutes in the future, making train travel more attractive. In addition, the 60,000 new seats for the ICE 4 and ICE 3 trains are intended to make rail travel even more comfortable and pleasant. The conversion will begin in early 2020. Conclusion: They’re comfortable – but on longer journeys, it still helps to get up and stretch now and then if it gets uncomfortable.

Several Deutsche Bahn employees were introduced as representatives of the roughly 200,000 staff members working across Germany. The team around Jens Kuster, Michael Chojetzki, Can Sasmaz, and David Ferneding came up with something very special to introduce the 19 students to software development. For this purpose, the children and teenagers were divided into four groups, each exploring programming in different ways. “Future Day is a great opportunity every year to connect young people with the topic of software development and inspire them to get excited about programming. We are, of course, very pleased with the strong participation this year, and we have significantly expanded our methods compared to last time,” says Olaf Clausen, Managing Director of AMCON.
